Exercising at 45: Expectations, Goals & Aftermath

Are you 45 or over?  I am.  I am also a little overweight, like the rest of America.  I used to be on my scale every day, constantly hovering over the target weight, that one pair of jeans, or how others think I look.  I hit an age, I don’t remember what age that was, where I did not have those thoughts or perceptions any more.  I just wanted to feel good and be able to do things with enough stamina to feel amazing afterwards.


I have also suffer from joint pain and am one of those people who are very attuned to muscle pain.  So, if I work out too hard, I tend to hurt to the point of a headache and am down for the next 12 hours.  Let me tell you, it is not a pretty site, and it hurts.  So, how can I and others like me increase exercise and feel great?!

The hubster and I started a fitness plan early December.  It also involved some food restrictions, but basically meals revolved around healthy eating.  We have an elliptical, but my husband hogs that machine, as if I purchased it for him and him alone.  Lol.  It is okay.. really.  I purchased a bike riser so that I could ride my outdoor bicycle, inside.  Genius move and I wish I would have done that a long time ago.  I started out using the P app to see how spinning really works.  Time flew by and I didn’t even know what happened.  I used that app for a bit, but without the bike to go with the app, I would get lost on some of the resistance levels.  I am riding a 15 speed bike, so it is not realistic.


I have been pumping that bike for about 6 weeks and it has been the best workout I have had.  My heart rate increases and I can maintain 130 bpm during most of my cycling.  I use music, extremely loud, and sing.  Did I mention that I have headphones?  Yeah, so, my guy just stares at me and shakes his head.  You know what I am talking about right?  Where you just sing loud and off key.  It sounds perfect to you with your great headphones, but to your witnesses? Not so much.


I have been working in walking outdoors also.  In fact, today we walked 5 miles through the country.  It was beautiful and amazing.  I wish I would have brought my camera with me.  I feel amazing, though a little sore and tight.  Nothing like I had to deal with previously though.
